Coin Jewellery

Coin Jewellery

Coin jewellery is a classic staple, from bracelets and rings to earrings and necklaces, coins are an unexpected, but beautiful accessory. But, did you know coin jewellery has an ancient history? Read on to learn about the history of coin jewellery and our favourite styling tips for layering and stacking.

The history of coin jewellery

Like so many jewellery styles, coin jewellery has ancient origins. In lieu of official currency, civilizations would use jewellery to trade and barter with – their precious materials such as gold and gemstones, and spiritual meaning providing significant value. Around 650 BC in modern-day Turkey the Lydians created the first standardised coins, revolutionising trade across regions. Each kingdom had different designs, which made coins collected throughout various trade routes a unique souvenir. The Ancient Romans were amongst the first to create jewellery with coins, known as ‘Gemme Numari’. Coin jewellery has been found in Ancient Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek and Roman civilisations and most often featured a pendant with multiple coin charms along a chain or beaded necklace.

How to wear coin jewellery

Layer with chains

A Coin Necklace is the perfect starting point for a layered necklace look. Use your coin necklace as the focal point, and layer it up using textural chains of varying lengths above or below the coin. When layering with chains, think about sticking to one metal like a Gold Coin Necklace with a Gold Chain Necklace or Silver Coin Necklaces with Silver Chains; this will tie your look together, allowing you to experiment with textures, thicknesses and lengths.

Layer with coins & pendants

Every Temple of the Sun coin necklace carries a unique meaning, conveyed through ancient symbols and the properties of gemstones. Layering multiple coin necklaces together or adding in meaningful pendants is a beautiful way to create and communicate your own unique story. Length is always key when layering, be sure to introduce each piece using a different length chain so every necklace has its own space to shine.

Add in a beaded necklace

A beautifully beaded necklace is the perfect way to introduce more colour and texture to a coin necklace stack. Our bead necklaces are all made using delicate gemstone beads, bringing both visual interest and healing properties as you wear.

Coin Earrings

Coin earrings are a beautiful way to create a meaningful statement, wear them alone for an understated look or embrace a maximalist style by layering them up with necklaces or an earring stack.
