How to Layer Necklaces

How to Layer Necklaces

Layering and stacking your jewellery is an empowering form of self-expression, each piece representing a moment in your life or side of your personality – and is the perfect way to elevate your own unique style.

Layered necklaces can be bold and impactful or a delicate and elegant statement, it all depends on the pieces you choose and the way you stack them. The beauty of layering lies in the infinite choice of lengths, symbols, and chain styles that speak to you. There is no right or wrong way to layer, and as long as you feel empowered in your creation, you're on the right path. Read on to get started on your necklace layering journey.

The Art of Layering Multiple Necklaces

In the case of layering your necklaces, three is definitely not a crowd! Two is the best place to start, and then go from there. A textural chain necklace layered with a pendant or coin necklace is a timeless combination if you’d like to keep things simple with two necklaces, or make a statement by adding more chains and pendants that speak to you.

More is always more when it comes to layering, so don't be afraid to stack five necklaces or more.

Mixing Metals: Gold & Silver Necklaces

Stemming from the misconception that our skin-tones only suit one metal colour, some naysayers may recommend against mixing metals. We on the other hand believe that mixing metals can create an eclectic and opulent statement that is a truly personal reflection of your unique style. Whether you're mixing rose and white gold, yellow gold and sterling silver, there's an endless amount of combinations to experiment with.

If, like us, you want to mix things up with both metals, add a variety of lengths and textures to keep things interesting. One of our favourite layering combinations is the Sura Necklace Silver with the Quinn Emerald Necklace Gold, which finds common ground in the vibrant beauty of the lush, green emerald stones.

If you decide to use only gold or silver necklaces, try playing with different silhouettes to create some texture and interest. We love layering a thicker chain like our Livia Necklace with a daintier necklace like our Cassi Necklace or Nicoletta if you prefer silver’s cool glow.

Combine Different Necklace Lengths

Using different necklace lengths is one of the easiest places to start when it comes to layering. Simply select one short choker style, one medium length chain or necklace and a lengthier coin or pendant necklace. This will create the illusion of a full necklace stack and draw attention to the unique beauty of each piece without any of them getting lost in too many layers.

Here at Temple of the Sun, we want to make layering our necklaces as easy as possible so many of our necklaces come with extension chains, so you can easily create layers with your favourite Temple pieces.

There really are no rules when layering, so if you have two necklaces of the same length that resonate with you – go ahead and stack them! We do suggest mixing up the textures of the chains to give each necklace maximum impact.

The Secret to Pendant & Coin Necklace Layering

Mixing and matching different shaped pendants and coins is a beautiful way to express yourself.

The most important part is picking the symbols that resonate the most with you. Start with a singular pendant or coin necklace like the Leon Necklace as the focal point on your chest, then layer other chains and necklaces above and below. Wearing two pendant and coin necklaces in contrasting lengths is a timeless statement, and can easily be layered with choker necklaces to finish.

Want to add a bit of colour?

Adding a stone necklace is an easy way to achieve this, we love natural gemstones for their vibrant hues and properties they bestow on their wearer.

How to Weave Meaning Through Your Necklace Stack with Symbols & Gemstones

Here at Temple of the Sun our jewellery carries meaning through ancient symbols and the properties of gemstones. Use the meaning behind your pieces to layer up and create a story that is a unique expression of who you are. Start with a simple chain like our Kiya Chain Necklace and add some colour and meaning to your look with a symbolic pendant and a beaded gemstone necklace, like the Ombre Necklace in Emerald and the Roar Necklace. The Roar Necklace invokes a fierce energy associated with lions, encouraging us to speak courageously from the heart.

A dainty and minimal look that evokes femininity is our Fine Choker Chain, Celeste Necklace Gold and Nazar Necklace Gold. The engraved crescent moon symbol on the coin pendant of the Celeste represents the feminine power of our divine Luna, while the brilliant blue sapphire stone in the Nazar necklace brings wisdom and confidence in one’s own intuition.
